TOPIK Study Strategies

Build vocabulary relentlessly

Vocabulary is the single biggest predictor of TOPIK success. Both listening and reading sections become dramatically easier when you know more words. Use spaced repetition flashcards to learn and retain thousands of words efficiently.

Practice with past TOPIK papers

Official past exams are freely available on the TOPIK website. Practice under timed conditions to build speed and familiarity with question formats. Aim to complete 3–5 full practice tests before your exam date.

For TOPIK II: Don't neglect the writing section

The writing section (쓰기) is worth 100 of 300 points and includes a 600–700 character essay. Practice writing structured essays on common TOPIK topics: social issues, technology, education, environment. Learn essay templates and transition phrases.

Immerse yourself in Korean media

Watch Korean dramas and variety shows with Korean subtitles (not English). Listen to Korean podcasts during commutes. Read webtoons at your level. Passive exposure reinforces vocabulary and grammar patterns you're studying actively.

How Spaced Repetition Helps You Pass TOPIK

TOPIK success comes down to vocabulary breadth and listening speed. Spaced repetition is the most efficient way to build a large vocabulary — it shows you words right before you'd forget them, so you maintain thousands of words in active memory with minimal daily time.

CuePrep users typically maintain 95%+ recall on vocabulary they've studied, with just 15–20 minutes of daily review. Over 3–6 months, that adds up to thousands of words locked into long-term memory.

TOPIK Study Guide FAQ

What's the difference between TOPIK I and TOPIK II?

TOPIK I covers levels 1–2 (beginner) and tests only listening and reading. TOPIK II covers levels 3–6 (intermediate to advanced) and adds a writing section. Your score determines your level within each test — you don't choose a specific level beforehand.

How many vocabulary words do I need for each TOPIK level?

Approximate targets: Level 1–2 (TOPIK I) — 1,500–3,000 words. Level 3–4 (TOPIK II) — 4,000–6,000 words. Level 5–6 (TOPIK II) — 8,000–10,000+ words. There's no official vocabulary list, but published study materials cover the most commonly tested words.

When is TOPIK administered?

Inside Korea, TOPIK is held 6 times per year (roughly every 2 months). Outside Korea, it's typically held 2–4 times per year depending on your country. Check the official TOPIK website for your location's specific dates.

How long are TOPIK scores valid?

TOPIK scores are valid for 2 years from the results announcement date. If you need the certification for visa applications, university admission, or employment, check if your score is still within the validity period.

Is TOPIK required for studying or working in Korea?

Many Korean universities require TOPIK Level 3+ for admission and Level 4+ for graduation. For the E-2 teaching visa, Korean proficiency can be advantageous. The KIIP immigration program accepts TOPIK scores. The F-2 points-based visa awards points for TOPIK Level 5+.
